Meditation Methods
Different methods of meditation often use the same techniques; this can make it
difficult to figure out where or how to differentiate between one style and another. Most often it’s the ‘ancestry’
of the method that makes one different from another; one might originate in China and the other in India and yet another from modern research.
Very broadly speaking, meditation can be divided into styles based on ‘ancient’
knowledge and styles that use modern thinking or ‘technology’.
There are many different styles of ‘ancient’ meditation. They may have different
methods but their aim is the same: to train our hectic minds to be quieter, to encourage quiet contemplation and
reflection…freeing us of stress and worry.
The most well known forms
of meditation based on ‘ancient’ knowledge are:
Transcendental
meditation (TM)
Vipassana
meditation
Zen
meditation
Taoist
meditation
Mindfulness
meditation
Primordial
Sound meditation
Yoga meditation
techniques
Kirtan Kriya
Christian Meditation
The most well known forms
of ‘modern’ meditation are:
Meditation for Children
Brain Wave
Therapy
Meditation
Machines
Audio Guided
Meditation
Are the ‘new’ styles of meditation really meditation or are they simply techniques
for reducing stress? Do they awaken our awareness and consciousness? That’s for you to discover and
decide!
