Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation, also known as ‘TM’, was
introduced in 1958 to the western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918-2008) and is derived from Vedic tradition. Since
1958 more than 5 million people have learned this simple yet profound technique. TM is mantra-based however, the
mantra is not chanted- either verbally or mentally -but is instead a “vehicle on which the attention
rests”.

“The Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple, natural, effortless
process practiced 15–20 minutes twice daily while sitting comfortably with eyes closed. It is unique
among techniques of meditation, distinguished by its effortlessness, naturalness and profound
effectiveness.” |

TM is practiced for 15-20 minutes twice daily sitting comfortably with eyes closed.
The TM website says that it can be done anywhere that is safe, at lunchtime in the parking lot, waiting for your
kids to come out of school, waiting for an appointment…on the beach!

The Transcendental Meditation technique is taught through a seven-step course of
instruction by a certified TM teacher. The course is followed by weekly, and then monthly, checking sessions
(averaging 20–30 minutes) to ensure correct practice of the technique. A course costs from $750-$1500 depending on
your age and circumstances. Click here to read more at the TM organisation's
website.
Meditation For Women is another great resource, written by Jeanne Ball who is a
writer for the David Lynch Foundation, a non-profit, philanthropic organization that supports meditation
projects for such diverse groups as at-risk kids, prison inmates, veterans, Native Americans, high school and
college students and the homeless. She has taught meditation and Vedic knowledge for over 25 years and is
director of the Transcendental Meditation program in Asheville, NC.
